An Historic Building
1929 and Onward! Lake Cliff Tower has led many lives...
The Early Years:
1929 - 1940's
- Built in 1929 as a grand hotel adjacent to the Lake Cliff pavilion and amusement park, a luxury tourist attraction since the early 1900's
- It later served as both hotel and residence, citing "An Address of Distinction" and "A Country Home In Town"
- The original ballroom featured an inlaid tile compass that remains intact in the penthouse
Legendary Radio Days: 1947-1960
- In 1947 Gordon McLendon launched the legendary KLIF from a studio in the basement of the Cliff Towers Hotel
- KLIF became a powerhouse and one of the most popular, and influential stations in the USA
- At KLIF, Gordon famously introduced the idea of a weekly top 40, and helped usher in the concept of 24 hour news broadcasting when he helped anchor round-the-clock coverage of JFK's assassination in 1963
- After KLIF moved to larger studios downtown, KGKO, and later KKSN also launched from the radio studio at the Cliff Towers Hotel
Health Care Era: 1970's and 1980's
- The Cliff Towers Hotel and Apartments became the Lake Park Nursing and Retirement Home
- It reportedly had a recreation hall on the 11th floor with magnificent views
Renovation and Modern Development: 2004-2022
- After sitting vacant for many years, investors and developers restored this Oak Cliff icon and created condominium homes that take full advantage of the lake setting, the spectacular city views and the convenience of this gateway location
